Radeon H.264 VCE Video Encoding With OpenMAX Lands In Mesa
In continuation of the Phoronix article from a few days ago about AMD Adds Gallium3D H.264 Profile Encoding Support, that work has now landed within Mesa's Git code-base.
This latest AMD open-source video work adds more H.264 video profiles to the Gallium3D video layer, implements H.264 profile support for the Gallium3D OpenMAX state tracker encoder, and adds H.264 profile support to the Radeon VCE code.
Months prior AMD open-sourced their VCE 2.0 engine support of modern Radeon GPUs to support video encoding on the graphics hardware that complements their UVD video decoding support they open-sourced a while ago. The OpenMAX state tracker within Gallium3D is the user-space API that AMD is promoting for exposing these video encoding capabilities. With this latest work, H.264 is now supported.
As of Wednesday evening, the multiple patches related to this OMX/VCE H.264 work have been committed to mainline Mesa. This new work will premiere with Mesa 10.3 that will premiere in the next few months.
