NGINX-Core Makes It Into Ubuntu 14.04 Main Archive

A few months ago we wrote about NGINX slated to play a bigger role in Ubuntu 14.04 with this lightweight web server alternative to Apache HTTPD being sought after for inclusion into the "Trusty Tahr" main archive. That milestone has now been reached.

The nginx-core package is now included within the main archive for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS for those wishing to use this lightweight and very fast web server. This is a big milestone considering such proposals have been raised in the past for Ubuntu Server but now it's finally happened.

NGINX offers a competitive feature set and even raised a round of VC funding. Now for Ubuntu Server users, its easier to deploy with Canonical allowing this package into main for the Ubuntu 14.04 Long-Term Support release cycle that will see much use within the server and cloud computing areas.

While the core NGINX package is part of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS main, missing out are other NGINX components/spins like nginx-light, nginx-extras, etc. These extra packages weren't allowed into Ubuntu 14.04 main over security and quality concerns of these extra modules.
