X.Org Foundation Moving Forward With Possible Merger
For months now the X.Org Foundation has been thinking of merging with a larger organization to take care of their more administrative tasks. Back in September of last year they decided if a merger were to occur, they would be interested in partnering with SPI. The Software in the Public Interest organization is the non-profit that's been around since 1997 and is the legal organization behind LibreOffice, Arch Linux, FreeDesktop.org, and others.
At today's X.Org BoD meeting, the latest status is:
- A two-thirds majority vote is needed by X.Org members to vote for dissolution (so that they can become part of the SPI).
- The X.Org Foundation needs to officially ask the SPI to join them.
- All assets need to be listed, from the bank accounts to the hardware they currently have to copyrights and other matters, but fortunately they have some time to come up with the exhaustive list.
The most challenge item perhaps though will be getting a 66% vote for merging with the SPI... In some of the past elections, they've come close to getting over just a 25% turn-out.
More details on the current X.Org + SPI status can be found from today's meeting logs. Don't forget there's also the X.Org 2014 elections happening right now and XDC2014 has been selected for Bordeaux.
