Fedora 21 To Evaluate Remote Journal Logging, 64-bit ARM Emulation
Yesterday on Phoronix we covered 12 new feature proposals for Fedora 21 and following that story yesterday were a handful of new feature proposals for this next major Fedora release.
On top of the features already approved, the features talked about yesterday and last week's approved features, a few more proposals were sent in yesterday for the approval by the Fedora Engineering and Steering Committee (FESCo) this week. These very latest proposals include:
- Remote journal logging for systemd's journal. The feature elaborates, "The high-level goal is to have a mechanism where journal logging can be extended to keep a copy of logs on a remote server, without requiring any maintenance, done fairly efficiently and in a secure way." To this remoute journal logging with systemd's journald would be a receiver side systemd-journal-remote process accepting messages in the Journal Export Format and then on the sender side would be a new systemd-journal-upload component. Communication between the server and client daemons would be over HTTPS.
- SDDM replacing KDM. For Fedora KDE installations the goal is to retire KDM as the default display manager and use SDDM instead. SDDM is written in C++11 and Qt5 and offers more features and capabilities than KDM, which is now mostly in a maintenance mode.
- Ruby 1.9.3 in SCL support.
- 64-bit ARM emulation on x86. The goal of this change is to allow 64-bit ARM / AArch64 VMs to run fine from x86 hosts using the standard QEMU and libvirt packages, along with components like virt-manager for 64-bit ARM virtual machine management.
- Disable the firewall by default within the Fedora Workstation. The current level of firewall integration into the desktop and applications is poor, so the firewalld service shouldn't be enabled by default. The Fedora network firewall would be disabled by default until there's a more user-friendly way for dealing with network-related privacy issues.
- Enable the Software Collections repository by default.
- Ship libzhuyin for a more intelligent traditional Chinese input method.
