DragonFlyBSD 3.6 Does Intel/AMD KMS, DPorts, Better SMP
DragonFlyBSD 3.6 is out today and it's an extremely exciting release for the BSD operating system!
What makes DragonFlyBSD 3.6.0 exciting includes:
- Major SMP improvements! There's major SMP scaling improvements by trying to eliminate as much kernel lock contention as possible and making other performance enhancements to help out multi-core systems.
- DPorts is now used for the default package management on DragonFlyBSD. DPorts uses the FreeBSD ports system as a base and the pkg tools for package installation. Over 20,000 packages are available via DPorts in binary or source form.
- There's now experimental Intel (i915) and ATI/AMD (Radeon) DRM/KMS graphics drivers! For more modern hardware the AMD and Intel open-source driver support has only been implemented in DRM/KMS form on Linux and not for mode-setting with the classic X.Org drivers. Now the DragonFlyBSD 3.6 release has Radeon and Intel DRM/KMS drivers ported over from FreeBSD. This will also allow a modern Mesa/Gallium3D driver stack to work on DragonFlyBSD. For more details see DragonFlyBSD Updates Its DRM Code Against FreeBSD and DragonFlyBSD Pulls In FreeBSD's AMD Radeon Driver.
Those are the three very exciting features to DragonFlyBSD 3.6.0. There's also updated locale/language support and other bug-fixes and new packages. For more details on the major operating system update visit DragonFlyBSD.org. New benchmarks are certainly forthcoming on Phoronix!
