Mir Is Still Overwhelmingly A Canonical-Only Affair
While Wayland 1.4 is set to be released next month with many new features and has seen contributors from many different companies, the Mir Display Server for Ubuntu continues to be developed exclusively by Canonical.
Reaching the end of the year, with the light news week over the holidays, I decided to run some development stats on different code-bases. While Bazaar doesn't have as nice programs for pulling out stats as Git-Stats, the Bzr-stats package does at least show the contributors over time.
When looking at the contributors over time for the Mir development branch, the code is still overwhelmingly driven by Canonical employees without much (nothing substantive) from the broader open-source Linux community, especially from the upstream Linux graphics projects.
All of the contributors to Mir found that committed to their Bazaar repository were from Canonical email addresses or people that are otherwise known to be Canonical employees. The only exception I found were two changes from Xiang Zhai, who appears to be an Ubuntu contributor but not associated with Canonical.
Below are the list of Mir contributors (with their email addresses removed) and the number of commits made. Kevin DuBois, Alan Griffiths, Robert Carr, Daniel van Vugt, and Alexandros Frantzis continue to be the Canonical employees doing the overwhelming amount of development on this display server that is already used by Ubuntu Touch and is expected to formally reach the Ubuntu Linux desktop by default with Ubuntu 14.10. There's been 41 contributors to date; these statistics are from just a few hours ago.
