Going Deeper With Xiph.Org's Daala
Last month Xiph.Org presented Daala, a next-generation open-source video codec. While there's still a lot of work to see how Daala will ultimately perform and compare in terms of adoption to the next-gen VP9 and H.265/HEVC codecs, it's continuing to show promise.
As covered last month, Daala tries to leap further ahead in technology over VP9/H.265 by having more substantial changes and have effectively started "fresh" in their design.
While Daala is still considered very pre-alpha in its current state, more design details are being published for those interested in the technical details of video codecs. Over on Xiph.Org is Daala Part 2 that covers Frequency Domain Intra Prediction. Other information can continue to be gathered from the Daala project page.
