Linux 3.11-rc2 Kernel Packs In Mostly Normal Changes
Linus Torvalds on Sunday announced the second release candidate for the Linux 3.11 kernel.
Being past the merge window for Linux 3.11, it's mostly bug-fixes going in but 3.11-rc2 also has the removal of the CSR staging driver that was dropped after losing developer interest and then a bunch of one-line code changes surrounding the removal of __cpuinit markers. These two patches generated most of the noise for 3.11-rc2.
Other noteworthy changes include some ABI/API clean-ups surrounding the new O_TMPFILE flag and changing how ACPI backlight handling is done. The ACPI backlight change should improve for systems with BIOSes designed for Microsoft Windows 8.
While Torvalds was calling for more Linux kernel patches after all the developer drama this week, he ended up characterizing the 3.11-rc2 release as being "pretty normal" for this stage. He announced Linux 3.11-rc2 in this mailing list message.
