Mono Project Continues Making Progress
The controversial Mono project for implementing various Microsoft frameworks as open-source on Linux and other operating systems, continues to gain new features and support. Miguel de Icaza has delivered an update on some of the recent Mono work.
Miguel has put up a slide deck on SlideShare.net that goes over some recent Mono improvements.
Among the new Mono capabilities are new collectors, DTrace probes, micro-optimizations, continued Mono mobile improvements, Mono 3.2 now ships open-source Microsoft frameworks, and there's also new Mono frameworks.
The Mono improvements on the mobile front largely benefit Apple's iOS devices. The frameworks now bundled within Mono that come from Microsoft code include the Reactive extensions, F# for all platforms, Razor, the Entity Framework, and the ASP.NET WebStack.
Xamarin, the new corporate entity behind Mono, has also open-sourced their Cocos2D XNA, Xamarin.Auth, Xamarin.Mobile, and Xamarin.Social components. Another component that Xamarin is after is PlayScript, which was a project started by Zynga and provides an ActionScript look-alike language, which Xamarin wants to integrate into Mono.
Features being worked on for future Mono updates will be shared in a later Phoronix article.
