The results in yesterday's article, AMD Radeon Gallium3D Starting To Out-Run Catalyst In Some Cases, were interesting but limited to OpenGL games. In this article are more test results from the same system configuration and Ubuntu Linux releases but now taking a look at the 2D performance of the open and closed-source AMD Radeon Linux graphics drivers.

Tests happened from Ubuntu 13.04, Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS, Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS, and then Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS with the Catalyst binary driver. The other Ubuntu Linux test scenarios were using the open-source Radeon Linux driver. The system was the same as in yesterday's article. These are just some 2D benchmarks being put out there for reference, so head on over to OpenBenchmarking.org for a recap of the system hardware/software details, system logs, and other information.

The results in full are also on OpenBenchmarking.org in the aforelinked result file while embedded below are just a portion of the results.

Cairo Performance Demos would only run going back to Ubuntu 12.04, but it shows Ubuntu 13.04 being faster than Ubuntu 12.04 LTS in some tests while in other Cairo workloads the standing is flipped around.

While there's different Linux distributions -- and Qt releases, etc -- in between the tests, it looks like the open-source Radeon driver is much faster than Catalyst when using Qt with the X RENDER back-end.

The GTK results, while there's various system library differences between the Ubuntu Linux releases, show mixed performance between the open-source Radeon stack and Catalyst.
