Mageia 3 Released, Still Using Legacy GRUB
At long last the third major version of Mageia, the popular community fork of Mandriva Linux, is now available. There's a lot of new stuff to Mageia 3 like a new version of RPM and updated systemd, but the distribution is still not shipping GRUB2 by default.
Mageia 3 is using RPM 4.11 and urpmi for package management, is being powered by the Linux 3.8 kernel and systemd 195, and the desktop environment options are KDE 4.10.2, GNOME 3.6, and Xfce 4.10. GRUB is still being used as the default boot-loader while GRUB2 is only available for testing, sadly while many other Linux distributions have been already depending upon GRUB2 for years.
Mageia 3 also has revamped package groupings and there is now a package for Valve's Steam client on Mageia 3 Linux.
More details on the Mageia 3 release can be found from the Mageia blog post. The Mageia 3 release has been dedicated to the late Eugeni Dodonov.
