Linus Torvalds decided to release Linux 3.7-rc8 on Monday rather than christening the Linux 3.7 kernel release. The final release will now come next week and the Linux 3.8 merge window will close right before Christmas.

Torvalds had been planning to release Linux 3.7 final after last week's 3.7-rc7, but due to last minute churn as a result of regressions, he's extending the development cycle by another week with 3.7-rc8.

For the Linux 3.7-rc8 kernel he will only be accepting major fixes with anything trivial and small being postponed to the Linux 3.8 kernel. There's many interesting features to the Linux 3.7 kernel while Linux 3.8 will also have exciting changes.

The Linux 3.7-rc8 release announcement can be found on the Linux kernel mailing list.
