Talk Of NVIDIA Looking At Wayland Support

Reports are surfacing that NVIDIA is looking at ways to implement Wayland support for their binary Linux graphics driver.

I've heard a few people contacting NVIDIA and hearing different things out of them regarding potential Wayland support. Most recently I was tipped off about a post of a recent email from a NVIDIA employee.

Your issue was just referred to me.

We have a recently opened Feature Enhancement request to evaluate the effort to add support for wayland. We are only currently evaluating the effort to add support and unfortunately have not yet committed to doing the work.

If this is important to you, feel free to contact me for progress updates. Please be aware that if we do decide to add support, it may take some time due to Engineering's workload and priorities.

I haven't heard anything definitive out of my contacts regarding planned Wayland support by their binary NVIDIA driver. Obviously when Ubuntu finally adopts a Wayland-based system compositor and Wayland is working better there will be more pressure on NVIDIA and AMD to support this next-generation Linux display technology. Until then, it's unlikely NVIDIA will actively pursue such support, especially this calendar year.

Most of what I've heard talked about with Wayland and NVIDIA binary driver support has come down to providing support for Wayland on ARM-based NVIDIA Tegra hardware since there is more direct customer interest.
