A New MMORPG On The Linux-Friendly Unigine

LINUX GAMING
It's looking like next year may be quite a positive year for Linux gaming with the likely open-sourcing of Desura, open-source Doom 3 code being in the wild, hopefully the Rage Linux client, and several games powered by the Linux-friendly Unigine Engine gearing up for release, among other Linux gaming announcements.

In fact, there's another new Unigine Engine licensee that's using this visually-intense engine to create a new MMORPG.

Denis Shergin, the CEO of Unigine Corp, tweeted over the weekend: "I'm so eager to tell you about a new mind-blowing MMORPG powered by @Unigine engine, but we have to wait. Hint: GSTAR Korea."

So there's going to be another Unigine-based massively multi-player online role playing game (MMORPG) that is "mind-blowing", at least according to Shergin. GSTAR is a big games trade show that was held last week in Korea. But what new game is the Unigine licensee? Denis Shergin has yet to tell me nor have I seen any other information to reveal what title it may be or from what game studio.

Among the anticipated MMORPGs from GSTAR 2011 were Warriors of the 3 Kingdoms II, Blade & Soul, Project C, Guild Wars 2, Red Blood, Kingdom Under Fire II, Yulgang 2, Archlord X, Cyphers, Firefall, and MU Online 2, among others. However, Unigine is ruled out for some of these games simply based upon the game studios behind some of the titles and others have been announced for other engines (namely Unreal Engine 3). For anyone that may be more into gaming and have knowledge on any of the upcoming MMORPG titles, feel free to chime in with your thoughts in the forums.

Whatever the title ends up being, hopefully it will have a Linux client since the Unigine Engine has excellent multi-platform Linux support (there was Linux support before Mac OS X, for those that may not recall).

Among the announced Unigine Engine licensees that are currently working to put out titles include a real-time strategy game from BlueGiant, Dilogus The Winds of War, Relics of Annorath, Syndicates of Arkon, an unannounced first person shooter from New FX Games, and MMT Online.

Internally at Unigine Corp they are gearing up to release OilRush, their first public game -- it's a real-time strategy. They also have the Unigine Heaven 3.0 benchmark coming soon as well as another new tech demo.

Until there's new Unigine Linux news to report, you can entertain yourself by checking out the video of this upcoming Unigine demo, which will have native Linux support with all of its OpenGL glory.
