Doom 3 Source Code Is About Ready To Go
It looks like id Software will soon be releasing the source code to their very well known Doom 3 game.
It was in early August that it was made known the Doom 3 source-code would be released (the very well known game built atop the id Tech 4 engine) this calendar year following the release of id Software's Rage game atop their next-generation id Tech 5 engine. Rage was released to the public last month (except the Linux client isn't likely until 2012), and so many have been wondering when Doom 3 will be released. A few days ago I mentioned it should be here in November or early December, but there's now an official update.
John Carmack, the founder of id Software and lead programmer of the id Tech engine (and a Linux fan), has tweeted a status update: "doom 3 source is packaged and tested, we are waiting on final lawyer clearance for release."
Assuming their lawyers don't have any real issues with this code (there shouldn't be considering the lack of third-party middle-ware and the previous generations of the id Tech engine being open-source already), the id Tech 4-based Doom 3 will hopefully make it out into the hands of the public in the near future. At least this will serve to entertain open-source developers while awaiting for the release of the Rage Linux game binary further down the pipeline.
