Linux 4.2-rc2 Kernel Released, Just Another Update
This was a relatively mundane release with kernel development slowing down nicely since the end of the Linux 4.2 merge window. Linus mentioned in the release announcement, "Another week, another rc. What can I say? Call me boring, but that's how this all works. This is not a particularly big rc, and things have been fairly calm. We definitely did have some problems in -rc1 that bit people, but they all seemed to be pretty small, and let's hope that -rc2 ends up having fewer annoying issues."
One interesting/odd change this past week was SSD TRIM support for the OS/2 HPFS file-system. Those unfamiliar with the many new features to Linux 4.2 can read our Linux 4.2 kernel feature overview.
I'm still having big problems with several systems on Linux 4.2 but it seems to be contingent upon some yet to be determined CPU-related Kconfig settings in the Linux kernel. The Ubuntu Mainline Kernel PPA easily shows off these Linux 4.2 regressions on many of my Intel and AMD systems. For the systems managing to work, there's daily benchmarks continuing to be put out at LinuxBenchmarking.com.
