Google has announced today Brotli, "a new compression algorithm for the Internet" that easily defeats other compression algorithms.

Brotli is a new data format that gets 20~26% higher compression ratios over Google's two-year-old Zopfli compression algorithm.

Brotli deflates as fast as zlib while compressing more densely than LZMA and Bzip2.

Google is hoping Brotli will become adopted by all modern web-browsers. More details via today's Google open-source announcement.
