Firefox To Ship Rust & Servo Components Next Year

Mozilla made the announcement earlier today that they are ending Firefox OS. However, there is some unrelated bright news today for Firefox fans.

Mozilla has announced that in 2016 they will begin shipping components of Rust and Servo in Firefox! It's been confirmed by the official @RustLang, the account for this programming language backed by Mozilla.

Mozilla's Servo has been making great progress this year and they hoped to do an alpha release this year that we have yet to see.

Servo, the next-generation layout engine written in Rust, won't replace Gecko over night. The change-over is expected to happen gradually with adding in Servo component by component. The Servo Roadmap outlines the plans for replacing Gecko components with Servo bit-by-bit. Some of the other 2016 goals include performance improvements (including GPU CSS!), better performance tracking, supporting more web platform features, better supporting WIndows, and more.
