Fedora 23 vs. Fedora 24 On A Core i5 Skylake System
With Fedora 24 set to ship today, here are some benchmarks I carried out yesterday comparing Fedora 23 to Fedora 24 on a Core i5 6600K "Skylake" system with HD Graphics.
Besides performance improvements, Skylake users will have much better out-of-the-box experience than they did on Fedora 23. In fact, with F23's stock kernel wasn't even the accelerated graphics support by default -- fortunately, over the past six months, everything has been tightened up and there's now good Skylake support on Fedora 24.
These benchmarks are just of a quick F23 vs. F24 performance comparison while a wide Linux distribution comparison will be published on Phoronix later this week. Fedora 23 was tested with all available system updates, which does minimize the impact somewhat of comparing F23 to F24 considering kernel upgrades, but was needed for more appropriate Skylake support.
Some disk tests improved for this EXT4-using Linux distribution.
With the newer Mesa, there are Intel graphics OpenGL performance improvements.
But some apparent regressions too...
Some non-graphics regressions due to GCC6.
You can explore more of these early results via this OpenBenchmarking.org result file. Stay tuned for a large Linux distribution performance comparison later in the week.
