The Tremendous Features Of Fedora 22

With Fedora 22 having entered its alpha freeze this week along with the software string freeze and change checkpoint deadline, here's a recap of some of the towering features of this six-month update to Fedora 21 and the second release under the Fedora.Next strategy.

There's many changes to find for Fedora 22, but the work that has me most interested in this next release as being a user of Fedora on my main production system include:

- Fedora 22 will be one of the first major Linux distributions shipping with GCC 5 as its default compiler, but not all F22 packages have been rebuilt with GCC 5.

- GNOME 3.16! I'm super excited about the GNOME 3.16 release for its improved Wayland support, numerous GTK+ additions, and other features as outlined in dozens of Phoronix articles.

- For those that aren't GTK/GNOME fans but rather in the Qt/KDE camp, there's Plasma 5 with the latest KDE Frameworks 5 / Qt5 for the best KDE experience.

- DNF replaces Yum as the default package manager.

- By default Fedora 22 will ship with a local DNS resolver.

- Fedora is using libinput for all input handling under X.Org.

- Python 3 is finally the default over Python 2 in Fedora.

- While using Wine-Staging as the default Wine packages on Fedora, there's Wine Direct3D powered by Mesa's Gallium3D Nine state tracker.
