Dell Joins The Khronos Group

Dell is now the latest company joining The Khronos Group as a contributing member.

Following in the foot steps of Razer and other recent companies that joined, Dell's motivation appears to be fueled in part by the VR ecosystem and the recent efforts around OpenXR and friends.

Their statement posted today on Khronos.org is a bit peculiar:

Dell Technologies is excited to join the Khronos Group and contribute to cutting-edge cross-platform development and innovation. We feel it is critical and strategic, given some of our R&D investments, that we start leading as a contributor in many of the cross-platform open standards run by the Khronos Group such as OpenXR, OpenGL, et cetera, so as to further innovation in our lines of business, whether it be content creation tools for XR in the Precision series, or better consumer experiences for VR and AR through next gen headsets and desktops/laptops.

It's a bit peculiar to see they mention OpenGL explicitly but not Vulkan. As well, based on the wording while desktops/laptops suitable for VR/AR experiences is obvious with the Dell (and Alienware, owned by Dell) systems, they also mention "next-gen headsets." Dell so far has been working on a Windows Mixed Reality platform, but we'll need to stay tuned to see if they do anything to catch our Linux/FLOSS eyes and something more catered towards gamers through their Alienware branding.

Anyhow, it's great to see the continued addition of new members supporting Khronos and their work on open standards.
