Linux has hands down best graphics/compute stack, period.
It just doesn't have the prosumer tools, and is not easy to work with like Macs....

i686 support should be dropped from mainline linux distros.

I am going to guess. Linux started out as a grad-student project in 1989, and was kinda flaky and missing a lot of features, especially hardware support...
