Fair points by all. I was a bit harsh and incorrect in regards to the open source drivers. But my dislike of their binary driver comes from experience....

True, but pulseaudio is the worst. Both alsa and oss4 are much better, I would personally go for oss due the higher quality (at least to my ears) drivers....

I'm at gentoo user at home, but at work I browse Phoronix with Windows. It's unfortunate but thats the way it is.
