do you have installed mesa with gallium system wide? if so you have to revert to classical mesa as gallium requires KMS....

you should try the classic driver on UMS - that should be way faster than any of these......

did you try compiling with higher -O options? usually these automatically do the right thing regarding "inline" and instruction reordering....

the features are mostly there in the gallium driver - unfortunately the perforance is even worse with that one.....
