          OpenGL 4.0 were released on March 11, 2010. Almost 7 years ago.

            They started testing immediately, but as the GPUs are super slow, initial testing hasn't finished yet. You can't release a product without QA.

                  There's also image load store in the vec4 backend needed for GL 4.2. After that I think it can jump the rest of the way...
