For anyone wondering, there is actually a hardware workaround for this, assuming your GPU supports VGA anyway:

If you're like me and have a bunch of those DVI to VGA converters lying around, this can be pretty useful. I'm not entirely sure how well this works on Nvidia hardware, seeing as they're a little finicky about displays that are actually on.

There is also DisplayLink's evdi driver that can be used same way (unfortunately, no FOSS utilize evdi driver, therefore it's not upstreamed).

Most likely because DisplayLink 3.x devices work astonishingly poorly with Linux. High CPU usage, kernel oopses, rendering artifacts, flashing screens, and not being able to reliably bring up displays without unplugging + re-plugging the USB cable don't make for a good user experience. Nor does 1+ second latency across ALL displays ( not just the DisplayLink ones, but even the laptop's primary display ).

Damn, I was hoping that this was going to be something to do with DisplayPort MST.
While DP MST technically works, it gives you a "single" display that is as wide as 2+. Would be nice for Xorg to see the monitors individually.

Sounds like it could be useful for testing games/3D graphics without a display.

For someone who does not have time to look at the patches, what is AMD-specific about this? As in why does it need to be part of the AMD driver and not a new generic one?

Umm is there any explanation on how to use this?
