This isn't really new. The one linked in the story is actually the third revision we've sent out. Phoronix even had a story about the initial release:

Is this patch just for GPUs using the AMDGPU driver? I've had working hdmi audio for my r9 270x for a while now, though it's not exactly a new card.

Also, just wondering, does my card (or, this generation or later) support greater than 2 channel audio through hdmi? I see that in KDE's audio configuration other ports support more than 2, supposedly, but HDMI0 seems to only allow 2. I'm guessing it's because my TV only supports 2, but just figured I'd ask for clarification.

Well, with Phoronix' usual rate of squeezing out 5 articles a day, there's not much room for either information density or fact checking..

Does this mean TrueAudio support? Is it AMDGPU-only? I ask because I have a Kaveri laptop, HDMI/DP audio works fine, so I'm a bit confused about these news...

It's only applicable to Carrizo. Some boards use i2s audio rather than hda audio. The i2s codec is fed by the dma engine in the acp block.

Correct. The GPU driver passes the speaker configuration from the monitor to the audio driver. The audio driver uses that information to determine the number of channels, etc. to enable.

Then I suppose I will wait for next desktop APUs to come out next year. Since Carrizo is in laptops only, I could care less about it.

This has nothing to do with HDMI or DP audio. It's only used for non-HDMI/DP audio ports on some boards.
