Phoronix: Linux 6.1 Will Make It A Bit Easier To Help Spot Faulty CPUs

While mostly of benefit to server administrators with large fleets of hardware, Linux 6.1 aims to make it easier to help spot problematic CPUs/cores by reporting the likely socket and core when a segmentation fault occurs, which can help in spotting any trends if routinely finding the same CPU/core is causing problems...

Queued up now in TIP's x86/cpu branch
I got a nine in my right, a seg-fault in my other hand

I think that, given that large servers typically run virtualized loads, this doesn't really help. The segfault happens in a virtual machine, with no static mapping between the host and guest cores, but from the qemu/kvm perspective, everything is fine. I guess some paravirtualized interface needs to be developed, to help such segfault reports propagate to the host which would then be able to map the CPU correctly, so that the sysadmin can spot patterns.

concerning the bent edge of the cpu....
Michael you can be honest to us: Have you used it to open a bottle of german beer?

Don't know how it is in the states. But here most young male try to open up bottles of beer with whatever might be suitable*: Lighter, Key, another Beerbottle .... Some try it successfully with cardboard.

Tipps und Tricks ein Bier zu öffnen :) Mal mehr, mal weniger elegant :-D Have Fun beim anschauen :)Hier gehts zu Teil 2 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L...

Since you like german beer and the culture around it...quite likely

*for those of you not knowing it - in germany (maybe whole europe) screwcaps on beerbottles are simply non-existent.

regarding the bent CPU, that stuff is more durable than you might expect. :-)
I recently bought a used CPU and the contacts were very dirty, thought about sending it back, cleaned it up, works like a charm.

2 years ago I accidentally bent some pins of a cpu socket on the mainboard which then broke off when trying to bend them back (tissue got caught while cleaning thermal paste), the CPU still works without a flaw in my wifes PC (probably were ground pins, not sure)
