Phoronix: Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Planning To Stick With Linux 5.15 By Default

It turns out Ubuntu 22.04 LTS is planning to use the Linux 5.15 kernel as its default kernel. It makes sense in that Linux 5.15 is also a long-term support kernel, but unfortunate in that Ubuntu LTS releases haven't always used LTS kernel versions and v5.15 will be a half-year old already by the time the "Jammy Jellyfish" ships in April. This is a choice particularly unfortunate for those with recent hardware but at least there is the Ubuntu Mainline Kernel PPA and other non-default options available...

I took the picture at OSCON / Ubuntu Live...

There was a circus at Ubuntu Developer Summit before.... that was a very odd party - https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pa...tem&px=MTEwMDA

Good example as to why Ubuntu isn't used for gaming much now

Gaming desktops * need * access to the latest kernel/mesa/nvidia drivers by default to be useful

          It doesn't matter anymore.
All users will install SteamOS 3 on their PCs by April.

          I don't think they'll notice the Ubuntu 22.04 release.

It's the same as usual. If you need bleeding edge packages to do your stuff on your computer you must choose a distro that does this, out of the box. Ubuntu does not and will never do. The focus of Canonical with Ubuntu on the desktop is for developers which will later on choose Ubuntu to run their workloads. Which tbh is probably a massive chunk of the Linux user demographics.

That being said, there are stablished third party ubuntu repositories for up to date graphics drivers and mesa, and Canonical themselves provide a repository with (non-customized) binaries for all mainline kernels. But as much as I love Ubuntu, I'd personally run something else if I were to game on a computer. Which I wouldn't.

Don't understand why people expect bleeding edge from LTS Ubuntu

Ubuntu for gaming? With old Gnome (as for now) without gaming performance improvements, Kernel and mesa? Good joke. Fedora FTW.

Guys. Cool down. It's just Ubuntu lts. If someone installs LTS for gaming, it their problem.
