Phoronix: Intel Gallium3D Driver Merged Into Mesa 21.2 For Gen4 Through Haswell Graphics

The independently-developed "Crocus" driver providing a Mesa Gallium3D implementation for Intel Gen4 "i965" through Gen7 "Haswell" graphics has now been merged into Mesa 21.2 for ultimately aiming to improve the open-source OpenGL support for these aging Intel integrated graphics generations...

Would be interesting to see some benchmarks on how Crocus compares to the i965 classic driver. Also would be useful to tell us how to enable it. I'm typing this on a Haswell CPU.

I'm guessing you test this by installing development versions of Mesa and then running things with:
      # MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE=crocus glxinfo

I'm also guessing performance will never be substantially different from i965, but at least it has a future without having to rely on a previous Mesa runtime.

AFAIR, lower CPU overhead when using a gallium driver compared to classic one at the least

My main work laptop is still IvyBridge
I would really like some basic benchmarks of classic vs gallium

I also still use on a daily basis a Dell XPS13 9333 laptop, that I bought back in 2014. Can't wait to see how the Crocus driver compares to the classic one.

This makes me happy, not expecting much from it now, but soon hopefully, even though my laptop should be iris compatible (It is a braswell) for some reason it's not. hoping this works, and at least better than current driver.

im not expecting too much, but a little boost would be nice

From what I understand it should also work on Cherry Trail devices, right?

EDIT:no actually crocus shouldn't support cherryview, since cherryview is gen8 or brodwell
