I am under the impression some of these conferences will not go back to physical format. First, is a lot cheaper to do it online, making the recording of it cheap and easy. Second, you get hid of the inconveniences of traveling, especially to the US, with electronics, a allergy to give your personal data away, and if you are not white and your name sound "suspicious" to airport security.

Even big commercial ones like automotive expos and gaming like E3, were bleeding money before Covid19, because some big companies realized they could achieve identical exposure in the internet just making marketing around the time those big events occur, expending a lot less at the same time.

You are forgetting about physically meeting people and spending time over food and drink together. The talks are only part of it.

Afaict, the FOSDEM core organizers are hoping that a physical event can happen again in 2022, so while keeping some of the infrastructure used for the pandemic version of FOSDEM, there was a lot lacking from the virtual event that we all hope to get back in February 2022.
