Phoronix: XWayland 21.1 Proposed In Splitting Off Releases From The X.Org Server

With no new X.Org Server releases on the horizon but Red Hat / Fedora wanting to ship updated XWayland support that is developed as part of the X.Org Server code-base, Red Hat engineers are now stepping up to carry out such XWayland-only releases derived from the same source tree but stripping out the code not relevant to XWayland support...

Can't wait to get those sweet sweet last Xwayland fixes while the rest of Xorg can rot in hell as it deserves.

Not really. No one has stepped up to marshal a release of the xserver as a whole for a long time now. The people that want a new release for their bits are now stepping up to release their bits.

This is the inevitable result of not one of the X devotees being willing and able to step up to maintain the X core going forward. This is how X ends, not with a bang, but with a whimper.

            Typo:

            X.Org Server's current "master branch"

            Should be "main branch"

It's funny because we need to kill X and it can rot in hell.. but we need XWayland to run X applications..

Step up for a release if you are brave enough to maintain that monstrosity for the next years.

Its funny because sure there are some legacy apps that don't speak wayland yet but should run equally well as under a normal Xorg session. So yes, Xorg is dead, long live Xwayland.

What are the most popular apps that still require Xwayland?
