Phoronix: LLVM 10.0.1 Finally Ready As Latest Stable Compiler Version

LLVM 10.0 released back in March and today marks the first point release finally shipping. Normally they try to be a bit more punctual in shipping the seldom point releases to LLVM but today marks LLVM 10.0.1 finally being available, just over one month out from the planned LLVM 11.0 debut...

If you look at their release dates starting with LLVM 4 (March 2017), this is right on schedule. March release with July update, September release with December update. It may not be perfect quarterly releases but it’s more or less expected at this point. They’ve effectively been on this schedule since 3.6.2 in July 2015 with only three outliers: 3.7.1 - Jan, 5.0.2/7.1.0 - May; the latter two being non-standard from their release scheme beginning with 4.0.0.

      Cheers,
      Mike

Wonder if FreeBSD 12.2 will feature LLVM 10.0.1 or go with LLVM 11 since they err on the side of caution and try to be conservative.

The last few FreeBSD releases have tended to stay with a recently available LLVM patch level to avoid the newest and greatest bugs in a fresh X.0 release (so LLVM 6.0.1 for FreeeBSD 12.0, LLVM 8.0.1 for FreeBSD 12.1, and, I would guess, 10.0.1 for FreeBSD 12.2).

No way 11 will be backported for the 12.2 release. Most likely for 12.3. 11 would have had to be released at least a good 2 - 3 months earlier for that to be a consideration.

Sad, the latest and greatest would have been more optimized for Ice Lake and Ryzen/Epyc/Threadripper 3 processors. Not to mention improvements for older architectures as well, but at the same time I like bug free and no surprises so I understand.
