        Someone was working on a replacement for CUPs when there was a licensing concern, but Apple relicensed so I don't think it went anywhere.

          Why? Apple has been supporting CUPS development for years now and frankly has done a good job. The package remains stable on all platforms it runs on and certainly meets the needs of cross platform users. Frankly it is good that Apple supports the developer of CUPS, along with many other open source developers, because we all need to eat.
