    Look like there are some severe regressions in FreeBSD 12 waiting to get polished.

      Also keep in mind 12.0-CURRENT ships with some debug bits and compared to 11.1 stock does have KPTI.

        Yup, if you have the time you should try to run 12-CURRENT without the WITNESS and INVARIANT options. You might also want to load aesni kernel module when the CPU supports it, it's not loaded by default because not all processors support it.           I would guess that part of the difference is meltdown and spectre changes.
