    In Linux-speak, GCC-6.4 is on Fedora-25, GCC-4.8 on RHEL-7, and GCC-4.4.4 on RHEL-6. I've used GCC-4.9.4 on RHEL-6 and CentOS-6; it's a decent compiler having most of C++11 -- enough to suit Qt-5.9 -- plus backward std::string and std::list compatibility with the system GCC-4.4.

    Fwiw, for personal projects I use GCC-7.2 on Fedora-25, which itself is rather in need of upgrade with Fedora-28 being RSN.
