There's ben a well-published branch the past few days of a patched GCC 7.2 code-base with the code changes for fending off Spectre while now patches have arrived on the mailing list for Spectre/CVE-2017-5715 of mainline GCC 8...

It's such a relieve to see those quickly published patches for integral parts of the ecosystem. Not to think, how many devices would be vulnerable for decades to come, if the respective developers would, for whatever reason (no plausible one comes to mind), remain stuck with some outdated version of GCC.
