Does this mean sed used to be very slow, or that most of everything else is now very slow?

Locked I/O should be faster than unlocked I/O. I'm confused.

Hmmm... Make GNU could also do some work on gawk - which appears to be powered by very slow snails...
I've had to use mawk - for some more complex projects - because gawk is orders of magnitude slower....

Would never had believed such big differences exist, considering how massive use most of these tools get, and how long they've been around.
