To be fair: They had to nuke Java from orbit.. It was the only way to be sure

I think some common programs in Linux distributions were actually using gcj. I can't remember which but maybe some pdf application? pdftk?

GCJ was one of the players (Kaffee, GNU Classpath, ...) that actually made Sun open-source their Java reference implementation, so big kudos to the GCJ hackers
