It was all explained in the earlier RC article... GCC 5.0 was just the version while in development. They have a (odd) new versioning scheme. GCC 5.x will be point releases, GCC 6.0 is now the current SVN/Git code, and GCC 6.1 will start the next stable major release series.

Why anyone would adopt such a versioning scheme is beyond me...especially after all the ire Firefox has drawn over their version-bump-palolooza.
