Rust Coreutils 0.0.29 Brings Improved Compatibility, New Performance Optimizations

Phoronix: Rust Coreutils 0.0.29 Brings Improved Compatibility, New Performance Optimizations

Following the release a few days ago of GNU Coreutils 9.6, the Rust Coreutils "uutils" project as a re-implementation of these core utilities within the Rust programming language is out with a fresh update...

Too bad it's not GPL anymore but MIT.

      Was it ever GPL?

MIT makes a lot of sense if their purpose is to maximize adoption.

Great news, you can fork it and re-license it under the GPL if you want and anything you add or change will be GPL as the MIT license has no contradictory terms with the GPL and it's only stipulation is that you leave the MIT notice in place. I'm sure this in't a big deal if you want to change something meaningful. Otherwise you'd be complaining about what someone else does with there own work. I'm sure that's not the what you're suggesting though, That'd be pretty entitled.

I wonder if uutils have implemented the same AVX2 & AVX-512 optimizations as upstream GNU Coreutils

I'd assume that getting to 100% compatibility would be the bigger priority right now rather than performance optimizations.

It would be nice if Apple decided to upgrade to, or at least offer as an alternative, a more recent variant of the coreutils for those who are more used to the linux userspace variants. An MIT license makes that a possibility.

MIT license is just fine to be included in a GNU/Linux system. I don't care if it is MIT or GPL as it is still open source. What I care is that this is an awesome project and I thank all contributors.

Why is GPL such a dealbreaker for people?
