We're talking about "master" and "main" as words in the English language. Does anyone here know about a known practice of assigning English technical terms by first checking all other languages for other meanings?

It would make sense to me, according to this thread there are at least 2 languages where main has significations that would trigger people:
- Dutch : where it's slang for men, which can trigger girl because they might think they aren't allowed to work on the main branch
- French : where it's the name of a sexual tool

I am (likely) not black and therefore I don't own the word master, which has historically been used in the context of slavery.

So if a black person would say that they are against this renaming because they don't want to be hated because of a meaningless virtue signaling, you would listen and from now on fight for the use of the term master? If it would at least would been some official black language council that was voted on by all black people, you could at least make this claim, but mostly it's some white people that virtue signal and help people that never asked for help in that way. But to be honest the line was crossed way earlier, with the N-word and R-word and other *-words, and it started even with banning of nipples in mainstream tv and it goes back to alcohol with 21 and absurd high legal ages for children... you are a snowflake nation.

The existence of the need of the replacement words "N-word" prooves that there is context where using the in the head popping up real word is ok. Because if you don't know what the N-word actually is, using that term makes no sense, because you don't understand what the person is saying.

So we here in germany are very sensitive about WW2 and Jews, and while we surely not perfect with things, like "Mein Kampf" should not have been censored, at least we bann no words. Probably because Hitler did that (book burning), and we didn't think we should take him as our role model.

The question is the CONTEXT, it's totally ok for me to say "dirt jews" was a slander used to attack jews, or something like that. Sure we also have some street renaming attempts, but still renaming a street is less radical than destroying statues.

The problem is with that that you are on a slippery slope if ever start to forbid words and ignore context, you end with a close to empty dictionary because you can find a sexist or racist or other discrimination in nearly every word if you looking for it hard.

And how does that work out for you in America? Your mainstream right winger want to forbit abortion more or less completely our main stream right winger are ok with abortion, why because the other economical right wing party wants to allow abortion 1 day before birth without any good reason. Meanwhile "the squad" just voted for a bill that excluded a minimum wage... while claiming that they are for 15 dollar minimum wage... and you get 1400 dollar 1 time payment in the pandemic while every other country in the west at least but also probably not west pay 75-100% wages so often 1400 dollar and more per month...

So typos and such aside, from my earlier post I'd like to clarify that calling someone a slave holds the same value as n*igger, the only difference is calling German a slave is kinda pointless same as with calling any white person a n*igger if you read my earlier post. In the end it's every Slav that has to suffer the real oppression, but I haven't actually met anyone so far who knew the actual meaning behind the word so that's probably for the better. As for myself I don't give a flying fudge. I just like history and pointing out obvious stuff that usually gets ignored.

When people come up with alternatives that make sense or are even more clear in their meaning, changes should be welcome. "Main" is on point and it's also a commonly used word that even non-technical people can understand without taking anything from its technical use.

Sure there are also completely idiotic and forced changes for the sake of someone's agenda, but there's no need to reject changes that do make sense and also help in some way. Let's not complain just for the sake of complaining. This is not one of those cases.

I disagree. If you are being pressured to change something just for the sake of an agenda, you should refuse to do it, regardless if it's a good change. They should have just waited 5-10 years and then do it.

Well, there is one rather large difference between us. SJWs try to impose their ideas on you, and if you don’t step in the line they will haunt you by putting you in negative media spotlight, generate bad publicity, argue on your forums and nag you until you give in and crack under pressure.

We also argue, you see, but we keep it to ourselves on separate channels without nagging projects or companies, and we don’t threaten them and we don’t try to impose our own ideals on others at every cost. When an SJW comes to our discussions and tries to prove we are racist scum, we of course jump up and defend. But we don’t go to others to try and convert them and make a devil out of them in the media.
