Phoronix: Rust Foundation Established To Steward The Rust Programming Language

Mozilla has been sponsoring the Rust programming language for more than a decade while in 2020 as part of Mozilla's big round of layoffs most of the Rust team was let go along with dropping the Servo web engine team. Following that plans were drafted to create the Rust Foundation as an independent entity...

Lets hope the Rust Foundation does a better job with Rust than the Xorg Foundation did with Xorg ...

Even before the Mozilla layoffs there were discussions to form a foundation, but it is true that the layoffs focused the efforts to put Rust on a more firm organizational framework without depending on Mozilla's organizational base. As anyone who has ever tried to create such non-profit will understand, the legal and regulatory frameworks take time to get accomplished. Good to see it has been completed.

Xorg foundation is just there for administrative purposes. It doesn't get involved in the technical direction.

Because they use Rust and they are interested in funding it. Same as any other organization.

Why doesn't it sound good? Microsoft is investing in Rust: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o01QmYVluSw (notice to talk is done on a Mac)

Microsoft says 70% of CVE fixes are related to memory saftey, I for one am happy that they are choosing to invest in Rust.

One of the things that would get a lot of people off the Rust-haters bandwagon is a language spec. The language evolved rapidly to 1.0, which is great, but I understand it continued to evolve - and that's terrible for something people want to use in production.

In recent times, Mozilla was not even the largest organizational participant in the various Rust activities (while it was extremely useful for Mozilla to be the incubator of Rust, and to continue to fund (and host) various activities, Rust had grown much much larger than being just about Mozilla, even as Mozilla still is an important part of the work going forward).

The usual suspects (with the deep pockets to fund ongoing foundation work (it is not cheap to run a foundation)) see the value of Rust moving forward, regardless of individual companies priorities and/or usage moving forward.

In the case of Microsoft, they have quite explicitly stated that they are looking to use Rust as part of their secure code work (to absolutely no one's surprise, many of the security vulnerabilities with WIndows code is associated with memory safety issues, and Rust addresses those vulnerabilities).

Thank god, the less influence modern mozilla has over rust (or anything at this point) the better.

I hope this is good news. But I am not entirely certain. Good: Away from Mozilla and their whimsies. Not yet sure: Now in a bowl with several big players, too. Big money, but also a lot of interests.
Let's hope it'll tend towards the better.
