For those looking for something open source there is FlightGear.

You forgot to complain about it.

        Yeah, it's not so good.
The only good thing about it, is that it is free open source software.

The certificate for that site makes Firefox cry (issued sometime last year, expired three months later)

I actually have more fun with flightgear than X-Plane. Agreed, it's far from being perfect, but it does have many good features besides being FOSS.

Do people actually use X-Plane? I've tried it a handful of times over the years and it always felt unrealistic and buggy as hell. The simulator core goes all wonky if you try anything abnormal like stunt flying a 737.

I think X-Plane is more about simulating the cockpit than actual flying.

X-Plane's flight model is quite realistic, but you need a pretty robust machine and have to spend some time tweaking options. It helps to reduce control sensitivity more than you think you should.

Airplanes are hard to fly, even little slow ones if you're doing wind effects. And mostly boring in real time and within normal operating parameters. X-Plane does a good job with instrument procedures, although ATC sucks and so do weather effects. I don't have any particular problem with x-wind approaches in real life, but it takes a skill beyond mine to do one in X-Plane. OTOH, IFR approaches to minimums with light winds work just like they should.

The control interface is more difficult than in a real cockpit and you don't get the inner ear, non-visual cues that help you "feel" what's happening with the airplane.

And as is the case with Flight Simulator, X-Plane benefits for the addition of acce$$ory packages and scenery.

Is there a simulator that does ATC much better?

As someone new to X-Plane, any particular packages you recommend?
