Phoronix: Oracle Now Supports Btrfs RAID5/6 On Their Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel

Besides incorporating the RHEL 7.4 changes from Red Hat into their recent Oracle Linux update, their Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK) has received a few updates of its own...

    That's a rather brave move.

"it's a pity though Oracle isn't trying to push ZFS into Oracle Linux"

Can we clear this up once and for all? No Oracle hasn't allowed ZFS to be used in Linux. ZFS dies with the exclusive platform it was intended for: Solaris. Well OK, maybe it'll be in the BSDs.

Oracle is selling us bliss. Their Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel uses standard kernel features, which are enabled by most distributions by default. ASLR, signed modules, SELinux, ... nothing on their overview indicates new and outstanding features we haven't seen yet.

Yes. Also overlayfs has new backwards incompatible flags and features for better "POSIX compatibility". The basic functionality isn't enough for everybody. I guess this doesn't include those?

Btrfs isn't dead and is constantly getting fixes/improvements. Good thing because I don't want a move to ZFS any time soon.

note that on the official btrfs wiki, raid 5/6 is still considered unstable, and write holes still happen as checksums aren't leveraged by current RAID parity code. (the whole reason to use RAID5/6 in BTRFS instead of classical LVM + MD stack).

                  So, nope.

No BTRFS RAID6 yet for me, still using plain BTRFS patrition on my old LVM +MD RAID 6.

I'll be waiting until more widespread testing.

Lets face it, ZFS failed the moment Oracle bought SUN and Apple dropped their plan of adopting ZFS as the filesystem for OS X due to Oracle refusing to licence it. Apple begun developing APFS in 2009 for reference so it and BTFS took around the same time to get first deployed (7/8 years).
