Nonetheless it seems unwise for them to take their hands off, especially after spending so much money forcing people to use OpenJDK.

I've not seen much people paying Oracle to use Java or Java programs.

Oracle is like the kid who bullied someone else (Sun) into giving him this new sports ball, but doesn't like to let anyone play with it unless they pay him to do so. That, or he keeps making up rules as he goes along and ruins the game. Then, he realizes he's killing everyone's interest in playing with the ball, and begrudgingly backs off as he just lets go of it.

Oracle Recipe for Open Sourcing:

1. Buy technology, never invent.
2. Buy it for a LOT of money, even if it comes with expensive baggage.
3. Make your partners as miserable as possible by changing the technology.
4. Make your customers as miserable as possible.
5. Wait for the technology to be obsolete.
6. Open Source the technology.
7. Repeat, start at #1

Fwiw, JavaEE is the least closed part of the Java ecosystem. Because it's a specification. What we have here is Oracle's implementation that's being hosted on GitHub.

So they expect GitHub surviving themselves paying java.net domain.
