Wonder when this UI is going to be open sourced? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8E_zMLCRNg)

Anyone remember Meego? And how the free software foundation and gnome put a ton of effort into it? But the GUI was closed source, so when it died, so did all that hard work. All of those apps, now useless. No one here can run them. That is what will happen if/when Jolla dies. The opensource community didn't benefit from meego and we'll not benefit from this.

Not sure Jollia cares about what happens to opensource, nor should they really. I mean its a business right ? Their first and only concern right now is to become profitable so they can recoup the millions invested.

Jolla is the principal upstream contributor to the open-source Mer core and released their in-house browser in git under the Mozilla Public License v2.0.

All open GUI, and still all Sailfish and Android apps.

Mer is a project that got the free (libre) software parts of Meego and create alternatives to the closed parts. Jolla is based on Mer. There are more UIs for Mer, and some days ago I saw (don't remember were) instructions to install a different UI on SailfishOS. I hope as you (and many other people) that they free Silica (SailfishOS UI) too.

Update has been put on hold because of a device lock issue discovered.
                Alternative UI is called Glacier.
