Phoronix: System76 Releases Updated AMD Ryzen Linux Laptop

System76 has been offering AMD-powered Linux laptops for a few years now and before rounding out 2024 they have announced the new Pangolin "Pang15" laptop with an updated SoC, 2K display with 16:10 screen ratio and 120Hz refresh rate, and other refinements to this all-aluminum build Linux laptop...

No coreboot? What's the advantage then? Why not just buy some random AMD laptop for hundreds less and install your favorite distro on it?

I wonder what the status of their in house design is? Has it been dropped or is it still underway?

How customizable is the System76 default BIOS? I'm interesting in stuff like changing the TDP, or changing the iGPU VRAM allocation, 🤔

There's not a lot of Ryzen 9 8945HS laptops with no dedicated GPU, most (If not all of them) have an Nvidia GPU.

This model has (Fortunately) a MUX Switch.

This model also has a MUX Switch.

And then there's one MinisForum mini PC.

The base model's specs and price seem nice enough for what I'd like in a lightweight system, but that name. It's like some nerdy toddler who just learned about different genitalia. Boys have a Pang15, girls have a Bag1n4. Anyways, since the BIOS stuff and toilet humor is covered, I was scrolling the page and I couldn't help but notice:

            Can it dual-boot?

System76 computers are optimized for Pop!_OS and Ubuntu. Additionally, you can run a variety of Linux distributions, as well as Microsoft Windows. Dual-booting is also supported!
That was answered backwards and rather weirdly. The question should be "What operating systems are supported?" or the answer should be "Yes! Dual booting is supported! While System76 computers are optimized for Pop!_OS and Ubuntu, they can also run a variety of Linux distributions as well as Microsoft Windows." Regardless, that comma between "distributions" and "as" is erroneous and should be deleted.

I also have to point out how backwards priced their storage options are since a person will be paying less per TB the smaller the drive they buy, but that 4TB to 8TB price hike, fuck me.

All aluminum body? Third best conductor of electricity behind gold (1) and copper (2) and malleable. I hope the shell is electrically well isolated then. I've run across more poorly isolated electronic devices with metal bodies in the past year than in the previous 20. The least voltage difference would arc and cause the most interesting effects... eventually killing them all. I have no direct experience with System76 build quality, though I would seriously consider them were I in the market. I'm just leery of metal cases as a faux indicator of build quality, especially aluminum.

because you are directly funding developers who work on linux, and get actual linux support.

S76 typically works with clevo or emdoor to design the laptops, they have... ok build quality, not great but not dogwater. They have historically been the weakest link. I don't know who this is with. really wish we got another hp dev machine

Which would be worthwhile if they had corebooted it.

What support do you need? It's a basic laptop. It's not like you are running Windows where the drivers get broken twice a year from the major updates.
