Phoronix: Improved Linux Power Savings For Intel Haswell/Broadwell Laptops In 2023

It's been just shy of ten years since Intel launched their Haswell processors that were very successful at the time and was followed by Broadwell. While Intel's open-source Linux driver engineers are primarily concentrated on recent and future Intel hardware platforms, occasionally there is an improvement worth mentioning for mature platforms like Haswell and Broadwell. A new patch series this week will help with some minor graphics power-savings for those still running a nearly decade old Intel Linux laptop...

I wonder what debugging I should do to find out why my Haswell laptop doesn't power off sometimes. I mean it attempts but it goes into some state where power is still on, display is off and nothing but four second press on power button has any effect. The same happens with suspend quite often but I don't know if it's related or a different issue.

My primary laptop is a Lenovo X1 Carbon gen 3 with a broadwell CPU, runs like a champ. Looking forward to this change to get into the arch repos soon!

Haswell and Broadwell rock. Good changes.

Do you by chance have multiple packages installed that deal with power management and can conflict with each other? My Strix G15 would crash if I iet go to sleep at a set time, but suspend worked fine if you closed the lid. Turns out Tumbleweed was still installing TLP and Power Profiles Daemon. Removing TLP and only using the latter fixed my issue.

This "feature", combined with screen's high refresh rate, is also known to cause serious stuttering / "tearing" on some Alder Lake laptops, it feels like it's broken by design.

Would this be available on Ivy Bridge laptops like ThinkPad X230 ? It's one generation before Haswell.

If this patch works it'll be great!
I'm still using my very old laptop that probably will be retired only when it dies. And if I get a better machine (I hope), probably some family member rocking an worse machine (or none) will get an upgrade.

Sadly the replacement batteries are not perfect, but still works for almost an hour! I'm glad if it can be extended!
