This is big news, upgradable graphics on a laptop is something that has never really existed, having a GPU and RAM on a stick that plugs into the PCIe bus would be a huge welcome!
Not only changeable graphics, you can also use that slot for a dual M.2 module. Very exciting.

Nice but I don't get the focus on upgrade capability in a laptop. If Framework really wanted to get me as a customer, a focus on reliability, ruggedness and low power, would be the selling points. After years of running Intel laptops the one thing that Apple's MBA M1 has taught me is that the I86 world doesn't get it. Lower power usage (long run times) and high performance in a light package beats most other concerns. Admittedly it is too bad Apple doesn't get some of their user concerns (they should be actively supporting Linux on this machine) but they make real the idea of a high performance laptop that goes for days on a battery charge.

You can easily repair it. And if your display and keyboard work fine, but you want something faster, you can upgrade. It makes sense to me!

If you own one of the earlier Framework laptops, can you simply buy the new AMD mainboard and swap it in, or do you need to buy the new chassis?

They mentioned that the upgrade to AMD will be just like going from an 11th-gen system to a 12th-gen one, no new chassis needed.

Not only does it make repairs and upgrades substantially easier, it also reduces e-waste and caters to the DIY crowd, who can use the provided standard modules for their own creations - which can subsequently also be upgraded using newer modules. No more buying a completely new laptop/device every 5 years - just upgrade the individual components you need as often as you need them and re-use, sell, or recycle the old ones.

In the video announcement, they specifically state you can swap out the existing mainboards for the new intel or amd ones. They're all equivalent hardware module-wise.

It's not for upgrade capability, it's for longevity.

So, are we seeing a very real possibility of multiple M.2 ports on the mobo a la SATA? It's been a dream of mine, but seeing as they're being utilised for many other things other than storage, such as that AliExpress machine above, it might start becoming a reality.

I'm well aware we have dual ports, but eh, MORE!
